8:40 a.m.: Pickup and drive from San Francisco to Muir Woods. Your private tour starts with a meet and greet at your hotel in San Francisco. Your driver will then take you across the Golden Gate Bridge on the way to Muir Woods National Monument, located 30 minutes’ drive away.
9:30 a.m.: Upon arrival at Muir Woods National Monument, your private tour guide will assist you to purchase tickets (at the Main Entrance, see the Travel Tips below for more information). Then your guide will take you inside the Muir Woods ancient forest to Bridge 1. Along the way, your guide will provide useful recommendations, all kinds of information, plus some handy tips about Muir Woods’ history, hikes, and loops. You’ll have everything you need to know to decide what to see and do in the park.
What to see and do at Muir Woods National Monument? Once in Muir Woods, you’ll see thousand-year-old, resplendent, and breathtaking trees. The deep, verdant, and unspoiled old growth of redwood forest will leave you feeling amazed. This is one of the last ancient redwood forests remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area. Made up of 558 acres, the woods contain redwood trees that are over 1,200 years old!
On this tour, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy Muir Woods National Monument. Your tour guide will accompany you to at least to Bridge 1. Along the way, your guide will explain everything you need to know about the history of this attraction, plus your options for walking trails and loops. Most of the options are easy and self-explanatory. You’ll also receive a free detailed map of the woods with your ticket. The main entrance is located next to Bridge 1. A gift shop, café (food court), and restroom facilities are open to the public.
Hiking/Walking: There are 6 miles of trails within Muir Woods National Monument. There’s an option for all ages and abilities, from an easy half-mile to one mile, or two miles. All can be completed within one hour depending on your pace:
● The 1/2-hour accessible flat loop is an easy option to get an overview of the best redwoods in the park.
● There’s also a 1-hour loop.
● The longest loop on the Muir Woods Main Trail is 2 miles long, with a minor elevation gain of 90 feet. It journeys past Cathedral Grove and up to Bridge 4, where you can cross over and trek uphill to the Hillside Trail, which brings you back to Bridge 2.
● Note: This loop contains rugged dirt paths and goes up and down hills.
● There is no cell signal or Wi-Fi available in Muir Woods.
Most recommended loop in Muir Woods: The most popular Muir Woods trail and the one we recommend is the main trail. This is a paved boardwalk between Bridge 1 and Bridge 3, and it takes under an hour at a slow pace. The trail loops around the redwood creek and returns to the main entrance and parking lot, so you can easily meet back up with your tour guide there.
What makes the redwoods so special? California’s coastal redwood trees date back as far as 65 million years ago—yes, that’s when some of the last dinosaurs roamed the earth! These are the world’s tallest trees. Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area are the only places in the world you can see these trees. As John Steinbeck portrayed so perfectly: “The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. They are ambassadors from another time.”
11:30 a.m.: Drive to Muir Beach Overlook along California's Pacific Coast Highway. This jaw-dropping cliffside trail and lookout allows you to take in Muir Beach, the Pacific Ocean, and Marin County’s imposing coastline. Your tour guide will take you on a short walk to a hanging cliff vista point to see the very best views
(Note: This walk is optional, and time and weather permitting).
12:45 p.m.: After approximately 70 minutes’ drive from Muir Woods National Monument in Marin County, you’ll arrive at Sonoma Valley Wine Country. We’ll head to the historic. Sonoma Plaza —the birthplace of the statehood of California and known as “the happiest place in California”!
Sonoma Plaza is located at the heart of Sonoma wine country, and it’s a prominent high-end shopping and four seasons culinary destination. This historic shopping district comprises charming adobe storefronts, monuments, a Spanish mission, meandering alleyways (paseos), sunlit courtyards, significant landmarks, tasting rooms, cafes, jewelry stores, gift shops, artisan boutiques, and galleries, plus an astonishing array of local and international restaurants.
Taste your way through the plaza—there’ll be samples of cheese, chocolate, and olive oil on offer. For wine and beer lovers, there are over a dozen wine tasting rooms and a distillery, breweries, and saloons just waiting for you to come are try their wares.
Lunch Break: All options are covered at Sonoma Plaza, from a quick and simple bite to delis and fine dining. Note: Prior booking is not required as 99% of the restaurants and wine tasting rooms allow walk-in guests. We do not work on commission and leave our clients full freedom to choose their favorite cuisine and restaurants.
Some of the top restaurants on the plaza include:
● Della Santina's Trattoria—authentic Italian
● El Dorado Kitchen—California farm produce
● La Salette—contemporary Portuguese
● Maya or La Casa—Mexican
● The Girl and the Fig—fine French-California cuisine (Advance booking required; please book for 1:15 p.m.)
Some other lunch options: The French Basque Boulangerie & Café (sandwiches and pastries); the Taste of the Himalayas (Tibetan, Nepali, and Indian); The Swiss Hotel Restaurant (Italian and American, plus old-world bar); Sunflower Café (salads, sandwiches, and many vegetarian options); The Sonoma Cheese Factory (casual barbecue, sandwiches, cheese, gelato, and has a gift shop)
Your private tour guide can offer additional lunch options as needed. Perhaps you’d like to visit a hilltop winery in Sonoma Valley where you select your favorite food from their marketplace and enjoy your meal outdoors? In the summer, some of the wineries we work with allow our clients to visit their luxury winery and enjoy delicious pizzas fresh from wood-fired ovens.
2:45 p.m.: After your lunch break at Sonoma Plaza, you’ll visit an authentic winery and enjoy a private, seated wine tasting experience. You’ll be presented with an array of premium local red and white wines. As you sip, take in the glorious views of Sonoma Valley vineyards and gorgeous rolling hills. Note: Wine tasting fees are included in the tour price.
3:45 p.m.: Leave the winery and return to San Francisco. Complimentary drop-off at your San Francisco hotel at around 5:00 p.m. is included in the tour package. We also offer an optional stop at Sausalito, a Mediterranean-style coastal town located just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco in Marin County. A relaxing stroll in this charming coastal town is the perfect way to cap up your fun-filled day. Replete with history, culture, and quaint waterfront storefronts, seafood eateries, and wine tasting rooms, there’s plenty to see and do. You can stay an hour or enjoy the rest of the day—perhaps ending with a romantic meal by the water.
We don’t drive through Sausalito unless you wish to stop there to take the ferry back to San Francisco. If you do choose to enjoy the optional stop in Sausalito, you will need to arrange your own transport back to your hotel. There are plenty of choices. You may return on your own to San Francisco by ferry. Alternatively, you can take a cab or Uber.
Note: Ferry tickets, cab or Uber costs are not included in the tour package once we drop you off. We highly recommend adding overtime hours at discounted rates to enjoy more quality time in the wine country and the stop at Sausalito.

There is no bad time to visit Muir Woods, as the weather is usually stable there—never too hot and never too cold! It can be cool and foggy in the summer, though, so dress warmly and layer up. Winter is the rainy season (late October – early April) and during this period we recommend a rain jacket (windbreaker), sneakers or hiking shoes for the trails, and an umbrella just in case.
Regarding Muir Woods National Monument and entrance tickets. The National Park service charges $15 per person and the cost keeps going up, don’t you worry that’s included as well in this full day private tour.
Important: Please book your Muir Woods tour in advance (weeks or months). Muir Woods became one of the first national parks to require advance booking of commercial and parking permits to enter this area. Note that this refers to parking permits organized by the tour company, not entrance tickets. Booking early assists us to organize these permits in advance.
The itinerary may shift based on your pick-up time, road, or weather conditions. When it is rainy or foggy, we may have to skip some areas/places due to safety considerations, lack of visibility, or because of park and/or road closure.
Many sites, attractions, and neighborhoods on this tour restrict access to large vehicles and vans, including locations like Muir Beach and Muir Beach Overlook. Tours like this one often offer the only access for groups to visit these places.
Unfortunately, our vehicles are not pet-friendly and are not equipped to accommodate passengers with disabilities or wheelchair needs.
Smoking is not allowed in our vehicles.
Most visitors who add a second winery end up skipping it. This is typically due to lack of time or because they’re satisfied with the wine varietals enjoyed at the first winery—i.e., the wine starts tasting the same on their palate or perhaps they feel a bit too tipsy. We recommend you consider this likelihood when thinking of adding a second tasting.
All wineries require booking weeks and months in advance (no walk-ins, especially in the summer). Book your tour with us ASAP so we can secure the best time slot and winery for you. The pandemic has led to restrictions on visitor numbers as well as staff shortages, plus significant price increases (double or even triple, depending on the winery), with wine tasting fees now ranging between $40 to $150 per person and per winery.
